Iran Returns to the United States
Iranian national team is going to play a friendly against LA galaxy on April 28, in Rose Bowl, Pasadena. More info here.
Another game against a south american side in DC might be in the making. Why the heck aren't they playing the US national team? I'd definitely go to the DC one if it's a team worth watching (no Guatemala crap please)
update: Believe it or not, it is now confirmed that they are actually going to play against GUATEMALA !!!! How bizarre is that? crap.
update #2: Crap, Iran played Laos today, I thought it was tomorrow. World cup Quals, Iran won 7-0 (naturally). Damn, I wanted to watch the game.
update #3: Korea, with their full squad, were held to a 0-0 draw by Maldives in their world cup quals today !!!!! (same maldives that lost 17-0 to Iran a few years ago) ... what's happening to Asian football?
Meetup

So, you're here to read my comments on the meetup aren't you? Well, no juicy gossips here, just glad to have met everyone.
Oh and in case you're wondering, the Don Juan mustache was meant to be a joke - partially Reza's request - you really didn't think I'd usually walk around with that thing did you?
what's that picture got to do with the meetup? ... Nothing! But I gotta post my rulebook-low-shutter-speed-candle-shot somewhere! Besides, I was forbidden to post any of the pics I took
My gorgeous friends
Ayeh's one of the very few good things about Vancouver. A gennuine friend. Without her and a few other really good friends (and my family of course), I'd have little reason to go back to Van for visits.
If she seems familiar she's the one I tried to sketch as my first entry in the sketchpad.
And we have very devilish and unethical plans of getting rich, although she does most of the planning, I'm supposed to execute. Hopefully, even if I fail to execute, she can "borrow" some from the world bank or something as she's going to be the future head of the U.N. :)
Cheers ayeh ... and feel better. mwah!
blank blank

Random day which included some escapades with newly acquired ghelyoons, some dizziness, too much pizza, and other random craziness, so, enjoy looking at some of my Tintin stuff ...
Weekend
Friday I ended up crashing at Hossein's, watching Capturing the Freidmans (excellent documentary, interesting how sometimes it's impossible to know the truth about things), and of course with all the extra features on the DVD took us well til 4:00 AM to finish watching it. Luckily, I live within a 10 minute walking distance from their place, and the weather was so unimaginably nice and the walk home was really refreshing.
Anyway, then today I cleaned the house a bit, took some random photos of "objects" (I'll post them gradually), returned the DVD, listened to hossein's zero 7 album (it's great). It was a friend's birthday and I was invited to the club, Money. I had to turn down the invitation cuz I was going to study a bit, but then some other friends called me again on their way there and so I went. Despite the stupid wait in the line up it was fun, and of course we hit 7-west for some food and now I'm here ... and what a totally useless entry.
Hmmm, oh yeah I was going to wake up at 6:30 today morning to watch Iran's game against China (olympic qualifiers). I over slept and woke up at 9:30, only to find out Iran had lost 3-1. It's so sad to see the Iranian olympic side do so poorly EVERY year (last time Iran was in the olympics was '76)! Mayeli Kohan is the coach, eventhough everyone loves to hate him for his religious fanaticism, I always admired him, because Iran's best team in the recent history was Mayeli's '96 side. He also coached the Futsal side which took the 4th place in the first Futsal world cup.
But, he messed up big time with the olympic team this time, there's absolutely no excuse ... very sad. Let's hope Team Melli will do better, although there's still a long long long way ahead to World Cup '06.
Musicbox III

Before going into the third installment of musicbox, I want to talk about Tamasha International TV. As you know by now I don't own a TV. I don't like the shallow stupidifying programs they shove down your throat. Anyway, but sometimes I watch some of these LA Iranian TVs online (via IRMTV), you know, just for laughs.
Now, I can't bear watching any of them for more than a few minutes. It's amusing for a short while after that the absolute amateur standards just get on your nerves. Among them Tapesh seemed to be slightly better. Fewer carpet sales and SOME decent "shows", other than just someone sitting in front of an ugly background manualy answering calls.
Anyway, but now I've just discovered Tamasha (thanks to Vandad), and I'm really excited. There's this show called Deev Show (stealing your fame, Deev?) And it is an ACTUAL show ! These guys obviously have money, and they have real sets, costumes, VERY good filming, editing, the standard is MUCH MUCH higher than anything else I've seen on Iranian TVs. I'm really excited ... the hosts have a VERY good sense of humor and make fun (tastefully) of other cliche'ed shows, and it's just very refreshing. And GREAT acting. And is it just me or some of the Iranian music videos are actually beginning to look decent? (Siavash, Sepideh, and some others). Anything not made by Koji. I think Koji, alone and single-handedly, is responsible for the absolute disgrace and CRAP which the Iranian music video industry is.
Now, musicbox. This week's feature is The Dining Rooms. An Italian ambient-downbeat band. If there's a course on music styles somewhere, the music of the Dining Rooms would be the perfect definition of ambient and downbeat.
Stefano Ghittoni and Cesare Malfatti form the Milan-based downbeat group the Dining Rooms. Both came of age playing for numerous bands in the city's alternative/punk scene before switching over to producer-based trip-hop and the breezy updated lounge of the Dining Rooms. [from allmusic]
Ambient, in its purest form, is all about repetitions. The trick is to come up with a tune fresh enough that wouldn't drive the listener nuts after five or six loops. And Dining Rooms do that to perfection. I could listen to Sei Tu or Mr. Dupont (from their second album, Numero Deux) for hours without getting tired. Sei Tu has something about it which is magical. New layers are added in each iteration so subtly that it prevents you from getting bored, without even being conscious about it.
Their third album Tre, has fewer tracks that stand out. Most tracks are very ordinary, but it still is not a bad overall compilation, and certainly makes for a listenable, smooth and chilled background music for those evenings when you just want to kick back.

Jesus

I haven't shaved for a few days now. I'm beginning to look like Jesus again.
I guess I better shave before the Jews start whipping me.
Sometimes time is the best gift one can ever give you. The one week extension for that project couldn't taste sweeter.
In other news, check out these celebrity prank calls, tastefully done.
Also, there's gotta be something wrong when Ali Coskun starts complaining about nudity.
10 things to remember ...
... when the chips are down.
Almost everyone around me seem to have their chips down right now, one way or the other. So, try reading this in today's Varsity (registration needed). Here's #3:
3. Actions are all that matter. It doesn't matter what you believe, or intend, or who you think you are. [...] When dealing with others, focus on what they do, not on why they do it.
untitled

Not gonna have time to do any sort of artistry for at least a week. Miscalculations with regards to a towering project's due date have made the week to come likely to be an excrutiating one ... but oh well ... "this shall pass too".
thank you thank you thank you

@#$!

arrrrrrrgh. Stupid laptop. It's found a new habbit of randomly executing the "back" function out of nowhere!!! And it likes to do it when I've almost finished writing a post ... piece of crap. I HATE repeating ... writing something I've already written once, drawing something I've already drawn once, or saying something I've already said once.
So, screw it, make up a post you think I might have written!
Rooz az no ...

Not a terribly good start to the new year, mixture of good and bad news, none of which I shall talk about. But the talk of music is always sweet. I'm not into R&B, but Bravebird (the single, not the album) from Amel Larrieux isn't really R&B. It probably borders too much on pop, but there's still something about it that I really like. Easy listening. Check it out.
p.s. does any of you know why some of my posts disappear when you move the mouse over to the nav bar? Something about how I've defined my CSS, surely, but what?
p.p.s. Hang in there, gooz bai bash ki, yes you!
A Spotless Mind?
Just came back from Eternal Sunshine. It was amazing. Amazing is not the right word ... it was the most brilliant movie I have ever seen. I was going to write a longer post, had it all thought up on the way home, but for some reasons I can't now, maybe later. Goodnight.
Movies

I was feeling useless and sick today, thinking about whether I should see Frailty which I had rented on DVD (Dean's recommendation) or whether I should hit the theatres and go see "Eternal Sunshine Of A Spotless Mind", which I suspect is exactly a type of flick I'd dig.
Then I realized it's only 7 and I can see Frailty, and if it sucked too much I could still go see Eternal Sunshine (which I'm hoping would not suck). So, it's 9:15 now, and Frailty sucked, I can catch the late show if I leave right now. I'm sort of tired, but if I don't go I'm gonna go to bed feeling I had the most useless day ever, so I think I'm gonna go.
BTW from now on - unless stated otherwise - all the pics you will see on my blog are all taken by yours truly. I'm not good enough to start a photoblog, so I'll just post some of the better ones here til I master the art of photography!
p.p.s The candle picture is mine too, they are one of the key objects in my decor, and pretty much define the color pallete for my entire flat.

Musicbox II

It's Norouz but it feels less like Norouz for me than it ever has. Nema has a good post about Norouz and what it is which I will link to. And I wish everyone who'se in the vibe a happy new year.
With that out of the way, it's Friday and it's time for another Musicbox entry! This time I want to talk about computer game soundtracks and I'll introduce a couple of brilliant ones.
Anyone who'se at some point even remotely been into playing games knows Neverhood. It's one of the greatest adventure games of all time. It's all about a bizarre clay world with clay characters doing extremely bizarre and wacky things.
The soundtrack, exactly matches that. It is a bizarre and wacky mixture of jazz, blues, and "noises" !!! The soundtrack has 39 - mostly short - tracks, some of which are guaranteed to make you laugh out loud, or at least put a smile on your face. Most of the "songs" have incomprehensible lyrics and are just funny gibberish. The few of them that do have actual lyrics, are similarly non-sensical. The lyrics to "Potatoes, Tomatoes, and Peas" go:
"Potaties love, My gravy love [...] I put 'em in my hat/And I eat 'em just like that/ I put 'em in my ears and in my shoes/I put 'e in my pants and I do a little dance/ They always seem to take away my blues"
My favorite is "Operator Plays a Little Ping Pong", the last bit cracks me up EVERY time.
It's rather difficult to listen to the whole CD in one sitting, but there are quite a few songs which always do seem to take away the blues.
Resources :
- A nice review by Steven Baldwin

Now, the next soundtrack is similarly bizarre, but not in the same humorous way. It is that of "American McGee's Alice". This was probably the last adventure game I played in full, and one of the best game I have ever played. The game itself is a twisted rendition of Alice in Wonderland. Alice's parents die in a housefire and she is now insane and in a mental hospital. The game takes place in Alice's mind, which is a magnificently twisted, desolate, deseased, and demented wonderland. As she battles the - now evil - wonerland characters, she is on a quest to win back her sanity.
Funny enough, I have always hated "scary" games (thinking about "Ultima Underworld" and "Resident Evil" still makes me shudder). But for some reason the diabolical frenzy of this game was actually soothing!
Now the soundtrack was one of the main reasons I liked this game so much. It is composed and arranged by Chris Vrenna, artist and founding member of Nine Inch Nails.
The soundtrack, much like the game, is eery. There are a lot of sound effects (crackings, tickings) and also a lot of orchestral and choir elements. It is eery, as beautiful as you can make it.
As a stand-alone CD, it's not as easy as listen to as that of the Neverhood. Specially if you have never played the game. But it still has a few extremely good tracks, like "Village of the Doomed" and "Flying on the wings of Steam".

Spartan
Looks like a good day today. Eventhough Thursdays usually suck. I have to TA the 3-hour lab and then I have a tiring class from 2 to 4.
Guys, no offence, but undergrads STINK! At least in engineering they do ... I mean, god ... they should hand out free deodorants to these guys ...
I saw Spartan yesterday. Well, some of it anyway. I wanted to see Secret Window but checked some of the ratings and both IMDB and mytelus had rated Spartan better. Of course, not having a TV and not have seen their trailers and not have read the actual reviews meant I had no clue what either of them is about. I only knew they are both thrillers.
So I go in, right off the bat it's evident that this is gonna suck BIG time. I mean, it's about mobs kidnapping American blondes and whoring them in Dubai!!!!!!! As if the Arabs are craving for American blondes!!! Sadly, scores of goreous Russian and east Europian women are queuing to go to Dubai (they make good money), so the idea of kidnapping women and dragging them all the way from America to Dubai is absurd. And who likes Val Kilmer anyway?
But the plot suggested that some of the action might take place in Dubai, and that was the reason I didn't leave the theatre earlier. After a painfully substantial passage of time, they finally go to Dubai. I was expecting to see some of the grand and lavish settings of Dubai, on screen.
Well, it turns out, they didn't even GO to Dubai. They probably shot the scenes in someone's back yard!! And it was PATHETIC. There were street peddlars, people selling vegetables on trollys on the sidewalks ! Small children with Yemeni hats, women with Burqa's that had NO similarity to Emirati burqas, everything was dirty. It had absolutely ZERO resemblance to Dubai.
And the following was the last string, I left the theatre after this:
*in a sleezy hotel room, still in dubai, girl and man in hiding*
*girl tries to grab a smoke from the man*
man: NO!
girl: I want a smoke.
man: No, smell of American tobacco carries well in the desert air.
Well actually I stayed a little more and also got to see the girl get naked and offer sex for the smoke. What do you know? The little American angel they are trying to save from the slave trade is a natural whore!
arrrgh

*sigh*
And what's with all the straight vertical and horizontal lines turning out slightly spherical around the edges? Don't tell me my lens is screwed up.

In our wonderful 3 dimensional world that telegraph pole is away in the background; in your flat 2 dimensional photograph that same pole is sticking out of someone.

I am now the proud owner of one of the world's ugliest digital cameras. That's right, the hideous Canon G5 (Sam, your guy was outta town, and his replacements were anal, so I got it from somewhere else). Sorry Asad, gotta start with the small league first, besides the Rebel was simply too expensive. Anyway, now I gotta start learning photography.
I've also been a little sick, hence the infrequent updates.
I had a stupid Ethics in Engineering seminar today, attendance was mandatory (you won't graduate without attending this!). I took a good supply of white paper with me, cuz it was the perfect 2 hours for sketching. It also gave me a chance to test out my new sketching pens.
But it was the worst ever. In all the nunmerous sketches that I did, there isn't a single one that I could proudly show someone, creativity, skill, at it's lowest ... very depressing.
What else? I just got a cartoon call from the Varsity. Haven't done anything for them in ages. Sounds fun though, except they want it by tomorrow so I gotta go work on it now.
Nova Stellar
I have a lot of musician friends. One of them is Arash from Nova Stellar who does really cool and original electronic music.
They are having a gig on March 28th. It's his first gig ever and it's in the Vancouver Planetarium -the home of the famous laser show !!!!!
I really wish I could be there to witness his first gig (I've known this guy since grade one!)
So, if you're in Vancouver then you'd be a fool to miss this. Incidentally he also just got admission to a highly respectable sound program at LIPA, so, congrats Arash :)
About the blogs
I'm sure everyone knows, but in case you don't, thought I'd mention it again.
The sketchpad thing is also a blog, but I only post sketches there. Whenever I update any of the three blogs over here (blog, persiblog, or the sketchpad) I ping blogrolling.
So, if you see an update notice, it might be any of those three (I'm too lazy to ping individually, and most of you have linked to me simply as legofish.com anyway).
Also, here are the [new] direct URL's for the blogs:

Parade?
I think there's a huge parade going on in Church St. I can hear it.
Not going there.
Musicbox
I like to introduce some lesser known bands that I usually listen to, perhaps on a regular basis.
I'll start off by introducing the Supreme Beings of Leisure. This former quartet (current duo) was formed in 1995 when Ramin Sakurai (keyboards) Rick Torres (bass) and Kiran Shahani (guitar), hooked up with vocalist Geri Soriano.
They play a refreshing trip-hoppy blend of groove that is very Morcheeba-esque. Their multi-ethnic background which spans from Ireland, to India, Japan, Iran, Puerto Rico and the Dominian republic has made their music new and different from the normal trip hop electronica.
The Japanese-Iranian Ramin Sakurai has introduced a fascinating blend of Tar and Santur music in some of the tracks, which I have never heard before in a clean and propper trip hop sound. Here's him on this issue in one of the interviews:
"I wanted to bring in some of my Iranian heritage on this record so I hired a santur [distant cousin to the hammered dulcimer] player for one track," Sakurai says of "Rock and a Hard Place" from DOS. "My mom's great musician friends have come over here to Los Angeles from Tehran and other parts of Iran for years. She actually hooked me up with a tar player [six-string banjo-/mandolin-like instrument] for the first SBL record and a santur player for this new one. I love the sound of the santur and have always wanted to play one myself. That guy was fantastic, he just nailed it."
Their first self-titled album acheived respectable sales. Since then the band has split, with Ramin and Geri continuing under the same name, and they have released a second SBL album called Divine Operating System.
I definitely recommend those who are into trip hop and downbeat music to check them out. Here is the track Strangelove Addiction which features a nice Tar sequence in the beginning.

The sketchpad is ready. By the way thanks to Webgard who gave me some pointers about this MT business, and so is now my bitch - the MT, of course.
Mariachi

Well, my piano isn't here yet, but my guitar is! I mean Faraz's is, mine's with him. I have swapped my classic for his acoustic, for a while.
So, it's great.
It would even be greater if I actually knew how to play. But oh well, goes well with the furniture!
New look

As you can see I played around with the blog a bit, I like it better this way, the frames were evil. Tell me what you think.
Also, anyone who has a link to my previous Persian blog (legofish.blogspot.com) can remove it as I have moved it here (the Persiblog tab) and no longer post there.
And I'm gonna post some cool pics of Gwyneth Paltrow for a while just for the heck of it!
Great Expectations

I just finished watching Great Expectations. I had not enjoyed watching a movie this much for a very long time (well, since Lost in Translation).
As I said I had seen it once before years ago (back in 99 I guess) and I enjoyed it the second time as much as I did the first. Now, I KNOW in many aspects, this is a horrible movie. It sank faster than titanic with the critics, and all the reviews called it a disaster. I mean, they are right, it is a weak hollywood melodramatic romance with extra cheese. The characters never really develop, the acting is not great, there is no climax, it does not do any justice to Dickens' novel, there are a lot of cheesy lines (I mean, heck, the catch phrase is "My heart, it's broken, can you feel it?")
BUT ... despite of all that, I love it. I absolutley love it. It's one of those movies that matches my soulprint (cheesy movie catch phrases, anyone?).
Each and every single frame is a magnificent and stunning work of art. Everything and Everyone in this movie are superhumanly beautiful. The sets, New York subway, the worn out houses, the gulf, and yes, Gwyneth. Have you ever seen something so beautiful that you felt you could weep? That's the feeling I get seeing Gwyneth in this. And Estella as a child was also angelic. How can you not be mesmerised with the first kiss scene, with the water fountain. Or with close-ups of Gwyneth, her skin tone, her electric smile, and her utterly attractive coldness.
What amazes me is also the use of natural light. There is SO much sunlight in this movie, and it makes everything glow, stunningly, it's unimaginably beautiful. I don't think I have ever seen a director use sunlight to make everyone and everything that beautiful.
So, eventhough I realize it's not a good movie in all the other aspects, I'm still glad that I own it. At least I know that I can look at 2 hours of pure beauty whenever I please.
Kissing in the rain
One of the many songs I just downloaded semi-randomly turned out to be "Kissing in the Rain" from the Great Expectations soundtrack (the '99 version). It's one of my all time favorite movie scores.
I saw this movie in the theatre back in the days, when I lived in the UAE, and Gwyneth has never looked so stunning in any movie, I remember I loved it, mostly because of my devotion to Gwyneth.
I wanted to see it again, I saw it once at the video store but every other time I go there it's not on the shelf, maybe it's always checked out. I have to go again right now to check, I really hope they have it ... *runs out*

*enters house with a silly smile*
I now own a copy of the Great Expectations on DVD ! They only had it in the sales section, pretty cheap, ... well, it *looks* new!

craziness
I had the strangest morning today. As usual I slept very late last night, fully aware of the fact that I had a class at 9 today.
My usual strategy is to set the alarm at 8, then hit the snooze a couple of times and eventually get up at 8:30, get ready by 8:45 and it's a 15 minute walk to school just in time to get there at 9. So I set the alarm to 8 and went to bed.
I woke up, without the alarm going off, but I was awake and I just kept tossing and turning in bed. I really was awake, and it was bright outside.
[Then I suddenly realized that I better check the time cuz I might have overslept or the alarm might not have gone off. Now my alarm clock is screwed and I can't actually read the time from it, I can still set it, so I get out of bed and reach my desk to check my watch, I check it, and it's 3 o clock!!! At this point I felt as shitty as anyone can. Imagine missing a class (in which you had to hand in your - yet unfinished - project which was due today). So, it was unimaginably horrible. ]
Then I wake up again, check the time, and it's 20 to 8! My alarm had never gone off and I had simply woken up too early. The entire sequence between the brackets was a dream, or was it? It couldn't have felt any more real. Very strange indeed.
By the way, the alarm did go off at 8, I hit the snooze a few too many times til 8:30 but then I fall sleep again and wake up to see it's 9:10 !!!! I still managed to get to class at 9:25 (took a cab!) so it wasn't too bad!
On the virtues of nose jobs
Believe it or not, this is Shohreh Aghdashloo. Say yes to the nose job.
Sunday digest
I don't feel like I'm contributing when I don't have any sketches to accompany my posts! Eventhough they should all be going in the sketchpad which I'm still too lazy to make, but anyway. Excellently productive day, I went to school, and figured the only way I'm going to study is to drag my behind to the library, so I did, and in 4 hours, I rediscovered that I actually CAN solve homeworks myself, without getting all the answers from the internet !!! Felt good! Let's see YOU try and find the equivalent Runge-Kutta tableu for a given extremely obscure implicit ODE formula, and figure out the order conditions and the stability region.
And as for the evening, I don't think you can ever go wrong with the company of two beautiful ladies.
In an unrelated matter, I'm getting a digital camera, but I'm facing a dilemma, I can either get an excellent camera, which is what I really want, OR, with that money I can get a very good graphics tablet (which would be of GREAT use to me, doing all that coloring and image processing with the mouse - and more usually the touchpad - is NOT fun), and there would be some money left to buy a mediocre camera.
So I don't know ... both of them are things I really want and I really use, and I want both of them to be high-end. Hmm ...
Based on a true story
Shadi's Birthday
I am extremely envious of those who know her better. She is a beautiful and remarkable girl and a fabulous artist.

I usually don't draw girls that I know, cuz i dont want them to be disappointed. You look far better than this so I can only hope you're not too disappointed! Happy birthday Shadi!
the fly
There was once a fly, flying until it got tired and decided to drink some honey, so he went to a public toilet in the bee colony,
then he took a piss, came out and went to a grocery store.
Welcome
Okay, looks like everything's done ... I'm going to launch this right after I post this entry, so I guess it's the first post you're reading.
So ... welcome to the new and improved Legofish!
First of all, thanks to all those who emailed me and inquired about my previous blog ... it was very pleasantly surprising to see that so many people actually cared, so, a gigantic thank you.
As for the rest, who might be wondering why I stopped writing for a while, I don't see the reasons important enough to grant a full post to, and I'm back anyway!
As for the site, I tried to go for the anime look, which is the latest thing i'm in, in the quest for finding my own "style" !!
There are still some little things I have to tweak, the comments section looks a bit iffy, and of course I have to add all your links.
One last thing, If you don't want to go through my main page every time you visit here to reach my blog, the direct links are :
http://blog.legofish.com for this one and
http://persian.legofish.com for the Persian blog.
pheeww ... I'm totally drained
pheeww ...
I'm totally drained ... I've been working on this site like a mule. I started saturday, and it's pretty much all done now, I only have to make the sketchpad and then add my work to the portfolio page ... but it sure was exhausting.
Making the statis pages was actually quite fun, but the blogs, this movabletype business is nasty man. I mean it's nice and all but to really figure out what's going you gotta know your shit with css and all, which I don't ... and it's a pain to go thru it all ... so the blogs don't particulary look like what I like them to, but oh well, i'm not gonna change them. This sketchpad blog is even more nasty tho ... gonna work on that tomorrow.
no one knows about here yet, so i'm practically writing for myself ... and it feels really good actually ... if all goes well I'll launch this site next weekend ...
I just saw American Splendor
I just saw American Splendor ... interesting movie, I expected it to be more enjoyable, but it was still good.
One thing I can't stop thinking about, is the role of Harvey Pecar is MADE for Al Pacino.
He is a real life al pacino ... he could have been portrayed by him soooo much better ... I guess Pacino wasn't young enough to play him .... what a shame.
